Thomasville police investigate IRS scammers

THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) -

Thomasville police are warning citizens of a scam after getting complaints from several folks recently targeted by scammers claiming to be from the IRS.

The con artists call and say you owe back taxes, then they start asking for personal information such as your social security number.

"We just want to make sure that our citizens are aware of these phone calls that they are making,” said Lt. Eric Hampton, Thomasville Police Department. “They could get a call of this sort about this and we don't recommend that they give out any of information from a personal standpoint to these people, because for one they don't know who they are speaking with."

Thomasville Police don't know of anyone who has fallen for the scam. If you get one of the calls they say you should hang up and call your local law enforcement agency.
