Two Baptist pastors preach responsible stewardship in light of Ebola crisis

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A pair of pastors, leading flocks thousands of miles apart, came together this morning at Ebenezer Baptist Church to raise awareness of the importance of supporting the Liberian people during the ongoing Ebola outbreak.

Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock and a delegation traveled to Liberia in February 2014, met with Rev. Samuel Reeves at Providence Baptist Church, and vowed to return in 2015.

However, an outbreak of the Ebola virus has dashed those plans, for now.

Reeves delivered a sermon Sunday to the congregation of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

"There's no other place on the face of the Earth that means more, or should mean more, to you than Liberia because you founded it. You made it happen," says Reeves.

As earlier in the week, Warnock stressed to parishioners it is in our "enlightened self-interest" to help the Liberian people during this time of crisis.

Warnock pointed out the natural disaster of the Ebola outbreak is compounded by manmade problems like a lack of access to medical infrastructure, poverty and civil war.

Reverend Reeves paints a grim picture of life in Monrovia, Liberia, where his church waits.

"Schools are closed. Businesses are shut down, and if it continues, it's going to affect every aspect of life," Reeves says.

Meanwhile, Warnock is fighting what he calls hysteria over bringing two Americans sick with the Ebola virus to Atlanta.

"The real virus that we are in danger of is the virus of indifference," Warnock says.
