HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Two months into the Rachael Ray ASPCA $100,000 Challenge the Southern Pines Animal Shelter is still going strong.

The shelter is competing against 50 other shelters from across the country to see who can save the most lives per capita during June, July, and August over what they did during the same period in 2013. Southern Pines set a goal of 1500 lives which would more than double their 2013 totals. After the first month of the competition Southern Pines saved more than 500 lives putting them off to a good start. They were ranked fifth overall in the competition and number one in their division. After two months of the competition the number of lives saved is now over 1000.

"We're just grateful, excited, speechless, at the outpouring of adopters, volunteers, fosters, donors, and supporters," said Ginny Sims, shelter manager. "It's truly been a magical summer. We have one month left and we're aiming for 500 more lives saved and we're really optimistic and excited."

Several more big adoption events are planned for the next four weeks. To find out more about them go to the Southern Pines Animal Shelter Facebook page.
