MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

Saturday morning, state Rep. Jeramey Anderson and education supporters were at the Moss Point district office to rally and publicly endorse Ballot Initiative 42 to fully fund the Mississippi Adequate Education Program.

They stood outside the building with flyers and signs that read "fund our public schooling" to draw in drivers so they could sign the Ballot Initiative 42 petition. Anderson hopes this rally proves that he is going forward with the promise he made in his election campaign.

"When I campaigned, I campaigned on a promise that I would support education. Not only in my district, but education in the State of Mississippi," Anderson said.

He says the education of our children is nothing to hold hostage or play political games with, and he's going to make sure every young child in Mississippi has an adequate education that will prepare them for their future.

"It's not only about your kids today. It's about your kid's kids, your grand kids. This goes further than the kids that are in school today. We're trying to spark a fire in this state that has for so long been forgotten about," said Anderson.

Don Smith taught for 16 years at Vancleave High School. He was the first person to sign the Initiative 42 petition, and says everyone should know how important this issue is for the state.

"It should be obvious to everybody that education is on a low point in Mississippi compared to other states, and it should be on the top burner of the legislature," Smith said. "I hope that people around the state start taking education more and more serious, because that's going to be the key to Mississippi's growth."

Those at the rally say for the state to move forward, everyone must be on board with this initiative.

"Education is important. We need education, and why would you not want to help out with this? It's going to benefit everybody in the long run," supporter Veronique McCovey-Husband said.

The State of Mississippi owes $8.3 million in previous MAEP funding that was promised to the Moss Point School District.
