World renowned doctor talks about risks for workers treating Ebola patients in Atlanta

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

World renowned Dr. Sanjay Gupta said he cannot imagine there would be a risk to the public after news that two American patients infected with the Ebola virus will arrive at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

"Is there absolutely no risk to the healthcare teams that are up there? We don't think so but they would be the ones who are most at risk. Other patients in the hospital specifically patients who are coming in for offices ... I just can't imagine how they could possibly be at risk," said  Gupta.

The hospital has one of four units in the world equipped to treat the patients.

Doctors said whichever patient is the most stable will be transported first.

"The scenario where someone's walking through an airport shaking hands with people and transmitting this disease, that's not the way it works," said Gupta.

He said the patients will have a better chance of survival at Emory University Hospital.

He said many of the patients in Africa have not had simple blood work done.

Gupta said the unit at Emory is now preparing for the patients.

"(The lead doctor who will be treating the patients) said a couple of the nurses on the ward who were supposed to be on vacation this next week came up to him and said, ‘we're canceling our vacation and we're going to stay here because we want to be a part of the team that takes care of these patients,'" said Gupta.

The first patient is expected to arrive as soon as Saturday.
