SYLVESTER, GA (WALB) -

A week after 8 teenagers were shot at a party in Sylvester people came together there Friday night to fight crime.

A National Night Out celebration was held at Jeffords Park downtown. Families enjoyed food and live music and got to know police officers, deputies, and other first responders. One Florida resident says more communities should have events like this.

"Get the rest of the communities and local Police Departments involved,” said Scott Vandermolen, Florida resident. “Let everybody know what's going on. It gives them a chance to meet young kids so they won't be scared of police officers."

It's a pretty good crowd out here tonight,” said Ilma Brown, Sylvester resident. It's just beautiful that a lot of people came out tonight."

Sylvester Police started the event in 2010.
