Help United Way of Lee County "Stuff the Bus" Saturday

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

The first day of school is right around the corner for students and the United Way of Lee County wants to make sure each child is equipped with what they need for a successful year.

"We average there is about 5,000 children in this community living below the poverty line, so it's really important to us that all of the kids are able to go to school and start of prepared to learn and not be worried about being embarrassed on their first day to be without school supplies," explains Community Initiative and Resource Development Coordinator, Chandler Barrett.

All month long, 20 businesses around the county have displayed donation bins for the Stuff the Bus Campaign that have been filled to the brim.

Last year the drive collected more than $10,000 worth of school supplies and officials hope to exceed that goal this year.

And if you haven't had the chance to donate, pick up some tax free supplies and get to Tiger Town in Opelika Saturday, August 2, where the United Way will be literally stuffing a big yellow school bus.

"Of course it is the tax free holiday weekend for school supplies, so it's a great opportunity to pick up some while you are out shopping for your kids and drop them off," says Barrett.

Next week, the team will sort through the supplies and distribute them evenly between Auburn, Opelika and Lee County Schools just in time for the first day of the new year.

"This community has come together so much in this drive, it really means a lot to us that the community cares so much about the children," says Barrett.

The United Way of Lee County will be at Tiger Town Saturday, August 2, in front of Best Buy from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m..
