ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany tree on North Van Buren could not be saved despite the desires of residents.

Jaime and Earl Gallup have lived in the neighborhood near Hilsman Park most of their lives.

Jaime took pictures of the tree she calls Big Bertha before it came down to keep record that "Big Bertha" was planted there over 100 years ago.

Her husband Earl says he lost a rocket in the tree when he was about 4 years old.

The city tells WALB News that because of disease the tree could not be saved. The safety of the citizens was most important.  Assistant City Manager Phil Robertson says city officials are working on ways to be more sensitive to area residents in letting them know when a tree in their neighborhood will be coming down and why.
