ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

A generous donation will help build a $5 million medical student housing facility on Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital's campus.

The Richard King Mellon Foundation donated $1 million to the Phoebe Foundation for the proposed 25-unit gated community. Construction could start in 2015 at the intersection of North Jackson Street and 4th Avenue. The homes would be used by third and fourth year medical students from Georgia Regents University, UGA’s pharmacy school, and other students studying at Phoebe.

"Right now we find ourselves in a critical crisis mode to try to recruit and retain primary care physicians to this area and we really feel like a medical student housing facility, which is what the gift was intended to fund will help alleviate a lot of the pressure in that crisis,” said Lauren Ray, Phoebe Foundation Executive Director.

Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital plans to invest $2.5 million into the project. With the donation, the foundation has raised $1.3 million so far, they need to raise another $1.2 million to begin construction.
