Second Harvest providing school supplies to South Georgia teachers

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The Second Harvest food bank in Valdosta is trying to help South Georgia teachers stock up on school supplies for the upcoming school year.

The food bank is holding it's "Teachers Harvest" kick off event until 4 p.m. Thursday, which provides school supplies like pencils and notebook paper to teachers for free.

The majority of the supplies were donated by the "Kids In Need" foundation, and the food bank expects to have had around 600 teachers come through by the time the event ends.

"Anything helps, especially with budget cuts and things like that," said Shirley Young, a 5th Grade Language Arts teacher at Moulton-Branch Elementary in Lowndes County. "It's a tremendous help on the teachers. It really makes a difference in our classrooms, that we don't have to worry about taking out our money and buying all of this."

Teachers are allowed to come get supplies twice a month during the school year. You can also donate school supplies to Second Harvest or make a cash donation as well.
