Suspect identified in fatal Decatur Co. shooting

Sheriff Wiley Griffin Sheriff Wiley Griffin
DECATUR CO., GA (WALB) - Leroy Wimberly is facing murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon in commission of a crime and possession of weapon by a convicted felon, after a double shooting overnight that left one man dead and another injured.

Investigators worked into the morning hours to find out what lead to a deadly shooting at this home in Sandy Acres Mobile Home Park. Decatur County deputies were called to the scene on Old Whigham Road late Tuesday night.

"Approximately 11 last night our guys got called here for a fight and some gunshots," said Sheriff Wiley Griffin. "When they got here, basically they found one person that had been shot."

Once deputies arrived, they found 31-year-old Chris Strickland shot dead. They also found 48-year-old Leroy Wimberly shot in the upper torso. He was taken to a Tallahassee Hospital.

Investigators believe it was a heated fight between Strickland, his 25-year-old brother Josh and Wimberly that lead to the fatal gunshot. Now they're trying to determine who pulled the trigger and how the fight started.

"There was an altercation inside and and altercation outside. So there is a lot of work to be done. "

A witness tells WALB she saw two two men in the yard of the home when it happened, one held at gunpoint. But detectives say they won't be able to wrap up the investigation until Wimberly is out of the hospital later this week.

Josh Strickland was taken into custody for investigative purposes, but is expected to be released.
