Nearly $10,000 in illegal drugs seized after chase

A man accused of dealing thousands of dollars in drugs has been arrested after leading authorities on a chase that ended in a crash.

Gerard Powell, 35, has been charged with manufacturing marijuana, possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, possession of hydrocodone with the intent to distribute and possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute.

According to a report, the investigation started after a concerned citizen told deputies about suspected drug activity at a home on North 6th Street in Cordele.

Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock said he performed surveillance on the home, and watched a suspected drug deal take place.

After the deal, Sheriff Hancock then tried to pull over a vehicle traveling away from the home, but the driver would not stop.

A chase ensued, and the suspect later crashed the vehicle and ran away from the scene. That person is still being sought by investigators. A small amount of marijuana and cocaine was found in the vehicle.

Officials later found $9,600 in illegal drugs inside the home at 1106 N. 6th St., including hydrocodone tablets, cocaine, and marijuana.

More arrests are expected in the case.
