Ordinance will ease parking problems for downtown Tifton

TIFTON, GA (WALB) - Store owners in Downtown Tifton will soon be stopped from parking in front of their stores. They city says it will clear up parking issues in downtown.

Downtown Tifton is normally busy with shoppers. But parking is sometimes an issue for Karen Daniels, owner of Alphabet Soup.

"allot of my customers have strollers and babies. Multiple children to unload. I have had complaints about them parking to down the street," said Karen Daniels.

The city is working on new downtown parking ordinance to stop store owners from parking in front of their businesses between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. They want the spaces for customers only.

"I've had to ask several merchants not to park in front if my store," said Daniels.

The ordinance will only be in place Monday through Friday and not on holiday's. The Big Store owner says the parking issue is a good problem.

"It means we have activity, we just want to have it where proprietors and employers do not take the spots that are needed for our customers,'' said Daniels.

Tifton Mayor Jamie Cater believes the store owners should allow customers the spaces they need.

"We have 5 different locations where we can park our vehicles and come into our businesses," said Mayor Jamie Cater.

Tifton police is on board to enforce the ordinance once it becomes effective.

Violators will first face warnings but, police would be prepared to write tickets if needed.

"We want people to be comfortable. We’re not here to write tickets but if we have to we will," said Cater.

They city council will vote on the final written ordinance in August.
