Public housing flat rent increase

Dan McCarthy, Executive Director Dan McCarthy, Executive Director
Some Albany public housing residents will soon see an increase in their rent.

At the Albany Housing Authority meeting, they approved the new flat rent schedule that's tied to local fair market rent and follows requirements of a new federal law. Rents can't increase more than 35%. Most residents pay rent based on a percentage of their income. HUD allows flat rates to encourage self-sufficiency. Authorities will meet with residents who are considering moving out.

"Now we've got a definite number, they know what the cost are,” said Dan McCarthy, Executive Director. “What we'll be doing at our different properties is giving opportunities for residents to come in and have some dialogue about their individual circumstances and what they're best courses of action might be."

17% of Albany Housing Authority residents are on flat rents. The changes will go into effect October 1st.
