VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Construction workers are installing a new sewer main in one of Valdosta's annexed islands, bringing the potential for connecting to the city's water and sewer systems to the area between Briggs Street and Thea Lane.

"We're providing water and sewer services to the businesses and residents of this area," explained Kevin Tolliver, engineering project manager for the city of Valdosta.

The city annexed the area around Thea Lane nine years ago and has been progressively working to extend the city's water and sewer lines into the area ever since. Because the area was part of the county prior to annexation, the homes and businesses in the area currently use wells and septic tanks.

Tolliver said while the construction over the next couple of days may be a bit of a nuisance, it's worth it in the long run.

"Everything we do in engineering is to increase the quality of life of our citizens," said Tolliver. "So, it's to give them our potable water and our sewer services."

Doctor Arunas Urbeonas's practice is one of the businesses in the area, and he's looking forward to being able to connect to the city's water and sewer system.

"I'm very excited for the opportunity to be eventually connected because we have [a] lift station for the sewer and we've been having some on and off issues," Urbeonas commented.

Tolliver said that even with these potential extra customers connected to the system, he's not concerned that the extra customers will create extra manhole overflow issues when it rains.

"Not worried, because there are improvements going on all over the city to improve our sewer collection system," Tolliver stated.

The construction is expected to be completed July 30th, and then immediately after that crews will begin construction in a different portion of the island.
