Lightning blamed for North Gate house fire

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Firefighters were called back to the scene of that fire as flames rekindled Monday morning.

Investigators say that lightning struck the back of the house and started a fire in the electrical system of the home Sunday night. They say it smoldered there and grew bigger and bigger, while the resident of the house were unaware of it. By the time they were aware, it was a raging fire that was out of control.

Crews quickly responded to the charred remains of a home at the corner of North Gate Road and Old Dawson Road. They were able to put out the flames after a few minutes.

"It took them an extremely long time to get it under control because the flames continued," said neighbor Donald Hawkins. "Seems like the more water was on it, seemed like the higher the flames was getting and it was just amazing the people that was out here."

Investigators began surveying the scene again Monday as they looked to determine the cause of the fire.

Officials said the fire broke out after 9 p.m. Sunday and quickly consumed the whole house. No injuries were reported.
