LUDLOW, MA (WSHM) -

One man is dead after police said he was armed and attacked his estranged wife, two children and niece.

Police have identified the man as 41-year-old Bruce Brissette, of Ludlow.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, police were called to Helena Street after receiving multiple 911 calls. Neighbors told CBS 3 that they heard about eight gunshots.

CBS 3 media partner Mass Live and The Republican reported that the man was firing at the house with his family inside.

"It looks like he approached the home from the woods in the back. He intended on gaining entry into the home, which he did, but he never gained entry through a secondary door on the breeze way, which could have been fatal for the family," said Sgt. Daniel Valadas, Ludlow Police Department.

Police believe the man eventually shot himself outside of the home.

The first crews on scene were able to rescue the wife, teenage children and niece through a window.

Ludlow police were assisted at the scene by Chicopee, Wilbraham and state police.
