ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Dougherty County Coroner, Michael Fowler, confirms that a 13-year-old boy has died from drowning in a swimming pool Saturday evening.

13-year-old Zhyir Johnson died Saturday evening around 7:00 p.m. at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital after drowning in a swimming pool yesterday. The incident happened at the corner of Kentucky and Owens Avenue around 6:00 p.m. Saturday evening. Fire officials are stressing the importance of safety when swimming at a public pool.

" There's three things that we've always taught with water safety is throw, row and go," said Battalion Chief Keith Ambrose with the Albany Fire Department. "If you look around at any of the pools that you're at, especially at a public pool, they've always got some type of life ring or a pole. If you're not a strong swimmer, grab the life ring, grab a pole, stick it out to the victim, let them grab it and bring them in."

Fire officials say parents should be present when their young children are swimming at  a pool. They also say the earlier a child learns to swim, the better. So far this year, there have been four reports of drownings in Dougherty County.
