Watermelon Capital of the World

Gary Holloway, Alabama Farmer Gary Holloway, Alabama Farmer
CORDELE, GA (WALB) -

Cordele is living up to its nickname as the Watermelon capital of the world.

The farmers market is busy right now with people buying and selling the sweet fruit.

Gary Holloway was buying a lot of melons this afternoon to take back home to Alabama to sell.

He's been making the long trip to the market for the past six or seven years.

"You have to get up at the wee hours of the morning and make the trip. I stop in Columbus and eat some breakfast and then drive on down. Usually I have someone with me, but today I chose to come by myself," said Gary Holloway, Alabama Farmer.

Holloway enjoys the making the trip during the early months of summer.

Every time he comes to the Cordele Farmers Market, he hires locals to help load his truck.
