The Baconton Fire Department now has one of the highest ratings in the country.
The department's Insurance Service Office rating, which ranks a department's firefighting capabilities, is going up from a four to a three.
The puts Baconton in the 99th percentile in the country and could lower property owners' insurance rates.
Only about 800 fire departments in the country have a higher rating.
"We studied the ISO rating to try to understand where we can pick up the most points as far as equipment, firefighting training and we continue to work on that every year to do better," Chief David Forrester of the Baconton Fire Department.
The new ISO rating takes effect October 1.
The county also approved a new fire department to be built in north Mitchell County.
