Memorial service held for former Albany Olympian

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - UPDATE:

Hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Alice Coachman Friday afternoon. Family members and educators spoke about the Albany native's success as a world class athlete, educator and mother.

Coachman became the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal when she won the high jump at the 1948 London Games. She died Monday at age 90.

"Her history, her life, will live on forever. And encourage those who think it's not possible to do certain things, it will give them an opportunity and hope to strive for those goals that they're seeking," said Norma Gaines-Heath, a Dougherty County educator.

The memorial was held at Alice Coachman Elementary school.
