CAIRO, GA (WALB) -

The Patriot Guard Riders are escorting the remains of USAF Capt. William Turnbull from Tallahassee Regional Airport to Clarks Funeral Home in Cairo.

Turnbull died on November 22, 1952 when the Globemaster airplane he was on crashed in a remote area of Alaska before it could reach Elmendorf Air Force Base.

Turnbull was among 11 crewmen and 41 passengers flying from McChord Air Force Base, Washington.   Searchers  could not locate and recover any of the service members because of adverse weather conditions at the time of the crash.

Almost 60 years later, an Alaska National Guard Blackhawk helicopter crew spotted aircraft wreckage while conducting a training mission in Alaska.

Sixty-one years have passed since the airplane crash, and Captain Turnbull, along with sixteen other service members, has been recovered and returned to his family.

Captain Turnbull's funeral will be at Barnett's Creek Baptist Church, 27 Maddox Road, Ochlocknee, on Saturday.

The central meeting point in Camilla at the old Huddle House at 9:15AM Saturday.
