ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An East Albany man is recovering after he was shot during an early morning drug deal.

Drug Agents said it's no surprise. Weapons and violence are often connected to drugs.

35-year-old Donnell Weston was shot in the left hip during what he admitted to officers was a marijuana deal. Drug agents said the community has been more aware of continued violence in drug dealings.

Officers were called to Hidden Oaks apartments on South Mock Road around 12:45 a.m. after the shooting. 35-year-old Donnell Weston showed up at the hospital with a single gunshot wound.

He admitted a man, whose name he did not know, shot him during a drug deal.

"We're becoming more aware of it," said Albany Dougherty Drug Unit Commander Major Bill Berry. "There is more violence in it."

Weston said the man who shot him, stole his two pounds of marijuana. Drug agents said anyone selling or buying narcotics should expect the people they are dealing with to be armed.

"As this shows, they are willing to protect themselves. Or maybe try to rob the other person of their product," said Berry. "[It's] not unknown for somebody to set up a drug deal and rip [someone] off."

Major Berry says the Drug Unit is making more presentations to groups, who are concerned by the continuing drug crimes and violence on their streets.

"The world we live in today, most everybody has a weapon, and especially the bad guys," said Berry.

He said they expect the violence in drug dealings to increase, because new and more powerful narcotics are being introduced. Also because more money is involved and more South Georgians are carrying guns.

Weston was released from the hospital later Wednesday.

Albany Police said they have not charged Weston or found the shooter.
