Tift Co. makes more gambling arrests

TIFTON, GA (WALB) -  The Tift County Sheriff's Office says that three women and one man were taken into custody in connection with commercial gambling raids their office has been conducting over the last several days.

Gloria Ann Knight was charged with three counts of Commercial Gambling, while Charles Alton Benefield, Marie Webb Mobley, and Jessica Guadalupe Garcia were charged with one count each.

Thirteen businesses, three homes, and an office have been searched in connection with gambling machines.

Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarbrough said it isn't illegal to own these machines, but paying winners in cash is.

"Those machines are legal, as long as you pay out tickets for merchandise. Your winnings are for merchandise. But you can't pay out in cash."

State and local law enforcement officials seized more than 100 commercial gambling machines July 7.

The GBI commercial gambling unit arrested five people previously.
