Commission makes animal shelter decision

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The Augusta Commission has gone to the dogs - literally.

Animal rescue groups filled the commission chambers Tuesday to have their voices heard.

"It's not the solution," said Willene Colvin, with STARS Rescue. "We have a long way to go still."

Commissioners unanimously approved Animal Services Director Sharon Broady's plan to allow rescue groups to come in and adopt animals out, but only if they're first spayed or neutered.

"What I still want to do is make sure the animals that leave the shelter are altered," Broady said.

The policy change comes after animal rights advocates took issue with Augusta's 70 percent euthanization rate at the city-run shelter.

"There are towns smaller than Augusta that are light-years ahead of where we are," advocate Jennifer Sammons said. "And it all comes to spay and neuter and education. And people who are in place that are dedicated. Not just another job, another paycheck."

Commissioners also discussed adding a position to the animal services department that would help alleviate the problems they're facing.

"I would hope you would bring that to us very quickly as we're working on budget because I just see that as an important position that's needed," Commissioner Mary Davis said.
