ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A Virginia father is facing felony theft and false statement charges after investigators say he faked Georgia residency to get lower in-state tuition for his daughter at the University of Georgia.

Albany State University officials say they take several measures to ensure students provide accurate information. They check a student's drivers license and high school academic transcript to show proof of residency.

"They also cross reference that with financial aid information,” said Thomas Harris, Albany State University Financial Aid Director. “The FAFSA form has a few background things in it that shows now high school graduation and where the student graduated from. It captures the basic censorship and residency information as far as that goes as well.”

Albany State University officials stress that students and parents need to answer those questions truthfully to avoid any consequences.
