ASHBURN, GA (WALB) - While some airports are being torn down, others are being expanded.

Expansion and construction at the Ashburn Airport is expected to begin this week.

Construction crews are adding about 1,500 feet to the runway which will allow for larger airplanes to land at the airport.

City leaders hope this renovation will bring the quality of their airport closer to those of surrounding counties.

“What we're hoping is that it brings more growth to Turner County. That it will put us in the direct competition to compete for industry and hopefully that it will bring more growth to Turner County,” said Turner County Commissioner Daryl Hall.

The project is expected to take 6 months and costs almost $4.5 million.
