Deadline approaches for Congress to move highway funding

(CNN) - The government is approaching another financial deadline.

Unless Congress extends funding to the Federal Highway Trust Fund by Aug. 1, the Department of Transportation says it will have to pull back on funding for state highway and bridge projects.

"This week, Congress will consider a solution to avoid that scenario, and the president will continue to urge Republican lawmakers to not block it,” White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said.

Lawmakers aren't just sitting idle. The House and the Senate are hammering out the details of a temporary extension. The question is whether that deal gets done before the end of the month.

"There'll be thousands of projects across this country; hundreds of thousands of jobs will be in jeopardy if we don't do this," Republican Chairman of the Transportation Committee Rep. Bill Shuster said.

Discussing their version of the bill Monday evening, the House Rules Committee hoped to put something forward that would easily pass both the House and the Senate.

"The bill before us will provide enough funding to get us through May 31, 2015. This legislation is the only package with all provisions having a proven history of getting big bipartisan votes in both the House and the Senate," Republican chairman of Ways and Means Committee Rep. Dave Camp said.

According to AAA, badly maintained roads force Americans, on average, to spend more than $300 a year on repairs and maintenance. In some cities, it's more than $800.

The price of gas could go up. The main source of money for the Federal Highway Trust Fund is the federal gas tax, although Congress hasn't raised that in 20 years.

The House is expected to vote on its version of the bill Tuesday.
