Conversation on race, reparations held on Thursday

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

On Thursday, July 17, the Southern Anti-Racism Network (SARN) hosted a forum to discuss reparations for African Americans at 6 p.m. at the Columbus Public Library, located at 3000 Macon Road.

Dr. Akinyele Umoja, chairman of African American Studies at Georgia State University, was the main speaker. Respondents to Dr. Umoja's talk included Dr. Jihad Hud, executive director of Project Rebound; Eddie White, vice-president at-large of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 987 at Warner Robins, and Theresa El-Amin, regional director of SARN.

Speakers talked about the worldwide demand for reparations from descendents of Africans who were enslaved, as well as the effort by Congressman John Conyers who introduces the reparations study bill HR.40 every year since 1989.

The perspective of "a transformation of society" in the injury areas of criminal justice, education, economic inequality, environment (including housing) and health care were explored.

This event was free and open to the general public.
