More officers to patrol the streets of Douglas

DOUGLAS, GA (WALB) - The shorthanded Douglas Police Department is getting some much needed manpower.

The Douglas City Commission voted unanimously at their city commission meeting Thursday night to give the department the okay to hire off-duty deputies to patrol city streets.

Chief Gary Castellos says the department is currently short six officers and the deputies will help until he has time to fill those vacancies.

“We believe by hiring extra officers, getting them in the patrol area and with the other officers it will deter a lot of the crime,” said Richard Hutchinson, City Commissioner Ward 1, Police Liaison.

The deputies are expected to start working for the police department soon.
