Lake Park vet offering low cost rabies vaccines, micro chipping
Dr. Alba Sosa uses an electronic device to scan a dog's microchip to demonstrate how the microchip works
LAKE PARK, GA (WALB) -
Dr. Alba Sosa may not have been too busy giving pets their rabies vaccines on Friday, but come Saturday that will likely change.
"What we're gonna be offering tomorrow is a low cost rabies vaccine and microchip day. It's $10 for the rabies and $25 for the micro chipping and registration," said Sosa.
Mason McGeehan, a Lake park resident, brought his two dogs to the vet Friday to get their rabies vaccines. "That's actually what we're here for today," McGeehan said.
He said the dogs are not currently micro chipped, but he's planning to take advantage of the opportunity Sosa's clinic is offering on Saturday. "Just in case your dog wanders off, and someone can take 'em here to get 'em scanned and then they can call us," explained McGeehan.
Sosa said micro chipping is the only real way to prove ownership of your pet.
"It's the only legal proof that you can provide that that is your pet," Sosa pointed out.
She said her clinic holds the rabies vaccine and micro chipping day three times each year, and she's hoping to see a lot of pet owners turn out to have their pets receive their rabies shot.
"Rabies is very common in the area from the fact of wild animals being potential carriers," noted Sosa. I don't think there has been a year since we opened the practice that there has not been a case report of rabies in Lowndes County."
And that's why she looks forward to holding these events each year. "It's rewarding. It's more about helping the community than actually getting a financial gain out of it."
Saturday, she'll do just that; help the community by making it easier for community members to have their pets vaccinated and micro chipped.
