Decatur County man has conviction overturned

The Georgia Supreme Court has upheld a lower court's decision throwing out the 2002 conviction of Jimmie Ray Williams on sexual molestation of his 13-year old stepdaughter and her 14-year old friend.

In Friday's unanimous decision, the court found Williams was denied effective legal assistance during his trial.

Williams was released from prison in 2012 after a judge granted his writ of habeas corpus petition that challenged his conviction.

Williams argued his attorney failed to get court records from a 1993 case in Florida where authorities concluded his daughter had made up claims that Williams had touched her in appropriately.

The testimony from his daughter was used in Williams 2002 trial in Decatur County.
