DOUGLAS, GA (WALB) - Douglas Police Chief Gary Casteloes confirms to WALB that officer Larry Carter was shot by a suspect early Thursday morning. He was flown to Savannah for treatment, and was later released from the hospital back to Douglas.

Police said the man shot Carter after a robbery in Douglas. It happened around 1:00 a.m. near the Walmart on Bowens Mill Road. Police said just before the shooting, a Flash Foods in Douglas was robbed.

Officers said shortly after the robbery, they spotted a Chrysler convertible matching a description given to Police. According to a report, officers stopped the car near the Walmart, and a passenger jumped out of the car and ran into the woods. Officers chased the suspect, who shot one of them in the leg during the pursuit.

The driver of the car was later caught and taken into custody. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Georgia State Patrol, and several local law enforcement agencies joined in the search for the shooter,
who was later found in a trailer park outside of Douglas Thursday night.
