Downtown post office signs new five-year lease

Albany leaders celebrate good news for customers who use the downtown post office.

City and county leaders today formally announced a new five-year lease to keep the post office open in the old federal courthouse.

The Postal Service initially planned to close the location because of budget cuts. Local leaders say it's part of Albany's history and has been there for more than 100 years.

Nearly 600 customers have boxes there.

"Most rural states, and rural towns, they are losing so much of their identities and most of those identities began with the post office downtown and grew from there and whether it's the clothing store or the two or three special places to eat all those grew from downtown," says County Chairman Jeff Sinyard.

The location is now leasing PO boxes to new customers, a practice that was stopped two years ago when its future was in doubt.
