NEWTON, GA (WALB) - Newton resident Mamie Lanier says the flood of 1994 devastated Newton.
"It's a memory that I don't like to bring up. It happened and we made it through it."
She and her family had only six hours to gather what they could and get it to higher ground. Her home on Norris Road was nearly submerged. Lanier says many people in Newton didn't rebuild their homes and businesses.
"It really changed the face of Newton," said Lanier. "There's no downtown anymore. It's the courthouse. But everybody is a survivor."
Lanier lived in a camper for six months while her home was gutted and rebuilt.
