Ambulance cost may rise in Lee Co.

LEESBURG, GA (WALB) -

Lee County commissioners will discuss implementing an EMS non-transport fee at their Tuesday night meeting.

Lee County manager Ron Rabun says county leaders are considering adopting a $75 fee for non-transport ambulance calls.

Rabun says paramedics have been responding to non-emergency calls from the same residents, which ultimately costs the taxpayers money.

"Maybe a fee will also make people think, do I really need to call the ambulance? Is this something that I can talk to my doctor, is this really that important, because I'm going to have to pay a fee."

A $100 non-transport fee was originally implemented in 2008, then later lowered to $50.  It was done away with in 2011. A public hearing will be held if commissioners want to move forward.
