ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Albany Police have confirmed a mother has been arrested after she left a child inside a hot vehicle while she went inside a store to shop.

Alexus Breanna Allen, 20, has been charged with reckless conduct and was taken to the Dougherty County Jail.

Officers responded to the scene just before 1 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of PetSmart on Dawson Road. They said the child, 2-year-old Jordyn McMillan, was left inside a 1998 GMC Yukon for about 25 minutes.

According to a police report, PetSmart manager Lavera Callahan told officers she saw the child inside the car and noticed that the window was about two inches down. She then reached inside, unlocked the door, and took the child out of the vehicle.  The child was later checked inside of a responding ambulance. She was expected to be okay.

According to the weather station at the airport in Albany, the temperature at the time was 90 degrees with a heat index of 93. Weather experts said temperatures inside a vehicle Tuesday could have reached up to 115 degrees.

The arrest comes just weeks after the death of a child left inside a hot vehicle in Cobb County on June 18th. Autopsy results showed the cause of that death was from hyperthermia, a condition in which the temperature of the body spikes due to the heat.
