As we look back on the 20th anniversary of the Flood of 94, we honor the victims who were killed and remember the survivors whose lives were changed forever.
The flood was a dark time in Albany's history, yet so much light shone through. Volunteers with boats rushed into flooding neighborhoods to rescue people trapped in their homes. City and county employees worked countless hours dealing with a disaster they never imagined could happen. Tens of thousands of strangers from around the country poured into south Georgia to gut damaged homes and help flood victims rebuild.
Ask someone who lived through the flood what he or she remembers most, and there's a good chance you'll hear a story of how people came together… How Albany was consumed by a spirit of togetherness that rose above the flood. We don't want another disaster like the flood of 94, but we sure do wish we could recapture that spirit.
