CORDELE, GA (WALB) - A 20-year-old Cordele man is getting some big time recognition for his talent on national TV show "Rising Star". Austin French has been a singer and performer his whole life.

"It really us all he's ever known," said his mother, Kim French. "Since he was about 12 he picked up the guitar and started taking guitar. He plays piano and guitar and it's just part of him now."

He was raised in a musical household. Now, he's the worship pastor at Journey Church in Tifton, and he's landed the opportunity of a lifetime.

French is a contestant on ABC's interactive singing show "Rising Star". His first performance was last Sunday and his family and fiance were there as America voted him on to the next round.

"Just very intense. Hoping that he would get enough percentage for the wall and you just have to wait and see if all of America likes him at that moment and it was live . You vote live and you have to wait and see if everybody likes what they hear."

"I think it went through our bodies and we all jumped up," recalled Hannah French, his sister. "We started screaming. It was total excitement." "It was kind of surreal," said Jocelyn Marshall, his fiance, who he's marrying August 1st.

French's family says the community has been supporting him on his journey. Their church held a watching party for Sunday's performance and plan to hold more as he moves up in the competition.

"He really had to fight emotion and everything with the wall going up and continuing his song," said his mother. "It's been something he's wanted to do. To be able to get his music out to just a bigger audience and for America to hear him. "

French's next performance will be in a couple of weeks. His family is hoping that when it happens, he'll have all of South Georgia watching and voting for his rise to the top.

"Swipe right!," said Marshall. "Please vote! He needs your support even more this time," added Kim.
