(RNN) - A flurry of offensive set plays weren't enough for the U.S. to defeat Belgium in the World Cup. With the 2-1 win, the Belgians advance in the tournament.
U.S. goal keeper Tim Howard had a record 16 saves during the match. Belgium had four saves.
Julian Green, the youngest American to play in the World Cup, gave fans hope by scoring a goal in extra time to make the score 2-1.
Moments before, Romelu Lukaku scores the second goal for Belgium in extra time of the World Cup match against the U.S., seemingly putting the nail in the coffin of the Americans. However the U.S. team doesn't seem to be giving up.
Lukaku's goal comes after Kevin De Bruyne kicked a low ball to the corner of the net past U.S. goalie Tim Howard at the beginning of extra time.
At the end of regulation time, the U.S. and Belgium were tied at 0-0. Teams must play all 30 minutes of extra time - two 15-minute halves. There is no sudden death score, also known as a "golden goal."
U.S. goalie Tim Howard has made saved amazing shots, saving the many defensive lapses by the U.S. team.
Belgium had 39 shots, 26 of which were on goal compared to the U.S. team's 17 shots, with nine on goal. Belgium dominated most of the game controlling the ball much better than Team USA.
Players on both teams received yellow cards; U.S. midfielder Geoff Cameron received one at the 18-minute mark and Belgium's Vincent Kompany was carded at minute 42.
Jozy Altidore, who plays forward for the U.S., was injured in the first game with a hamstring strain, but did not start, nor was substituted in during play.
