VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -

Valdosta firefighters have some safety tips for residents planning to shoot off fireworks this Fourth of July.

Fire officials said Monday that the best thing to do is to go see a professional fireworks show rather than shoot off fireworks yourself. But, if you do shoot off fireworks, make sure you only use legal ones and always have adult supervision, especially with children.

"If they leave the ground, they're considered illegal," said Valdosta Fire Marshall, John Wisenbaker, as he explained what fireworks are illegal to have in Valdosta.

"And then, we ask you to, if you're gonna do 'em with your kids, which most people do, we want you to really supervise your kids close and really we would prefer the kids not handle the fireworks," Wisenbaker added.

There is a $1,000 fine for anyone caught using illegal fireworks in the city.
