After a year off, the Albany Marine Corps Logistics Base was able to hold its annual Independence Day celebration Friday. Last year's celebration was called off because of federal sequester budget cuts.

South Georgians enjoyed food and entertainment at the base tonight, but they also relished in the opportunity to say thank you to the people who help ensure our freedom.

Brenda Dorminey's family has no immediate attachment to the base but was honored to thank  the Marines and civilian workers at the base face to face.

"Being able to be out here with them so they know that we appreciate them," Dorminey said. "We appreciate it, we wouldn't be able to live the way we do without you."

Sergeant Timothy Foreness, who has been working on the base for the past year and a half, says he appreciates the sentiment, and he loves what this event does for others.

"It's real good event for them to come out here, see the fireworks. See that we are very involved in the community," Foreness said. "We are always out here trying to put our time into the community."

Amber Hall's husband works on the base. The opportunity to spend time with her family in this environment is something she cherishes.

"It means a lot because we don't get to spend a lot of time together," Hall said. "But today, it's family day."

The city of Albany's July 4th celebration will be held next Friday at the Exchange Club Fairgrounds.
