DNR: Boaters need to follow Operation Dry Water

Posted: Updated:
LAKE BLACKSHEAR, GA (WALB) -

The Georgia DNR will crack down on boating under the influence ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

Operation Dry Water is part a national effort to discourage boating under the influence.

From Friday through Sunday DNR officials will spread the word about the dangers of using alcohol and drugs while boating and will look for violators.

DNR Law Enforcement say more people will be on the waterways for the Fourth of July weekend than any other holiday this year.

"The greatest thing you can do to prevent a BUI is to have a designated driver. When you come to the lake, we want you to have a good time. Just take a few seconds to get a designated driver to ensure you have a safe operator," said Cpl. Bob Holley.

Authorities have arrested 4 people for BUI's at Lake Blackshear since Memorial Day.

There have been 69 arrests so far statewide.
