Police: Package swiped by thief minutes after delivery

It might be time to keep a closer eye on your mail. Police say someone in Vancouver swiped a package right off one man's doorstep on Wednesday.

The victim caught the crime on his home surveillance cameras.

"Quickly goes to the front door, picks up the package, tosses it into the back of his vehicle and jumps back in. Very quickly," the victim described the crime.

He asked not to be identified.

The man said the package he'd been waiting for all day was delivered and stolen in less than three minutes.

"I was just in shock. I couldn't believe it," he said. "Out of all the things that I thought could have happened to the package that really wasn't one of them."

He said around 3 p.m. on Wednesday he got an email. It told him the restaurant-style coffee maker he'd ordered online should be waiting on his door step when he got home from work.

But, when he used his cell phone to remotely look through his camera system to double check that the package was there, it was nowhere to be seen.

"First I checked the neighbors where they've delivered wrong packages before," the man said. "Then, I came back and checked the video and that's when I found out what had actually happened with the package."

He said the coffee maker can be replaced, but his sense of security cannot.

"It's more a violation of our home that is the worst part of it," he said. "I want to prevent that from happening to someone else also."

Anyone who recognizes the thief or the car in the video, or knows anything about this crime, is asked to contact the Vancouver Police Department.
