LAKE PARK, GA (WALB) -

Some South Georgia veterans now have a little less work to do around their houses thanks to a group of volunteers.

The House of Heroes organization helped out some veterans and widows of veterans in Lake Park Tuesday morning.

Volunteers spread fresh mulch in the plant beds in front of Ron and Arlene Neumann's home.

"I've been the type that's always helpin' others. But, it's a great honor. It's something that I never expected and I'm well blessed to have it done," said Ron Neumann.

Neumann is retired from the Air Force and has difficulty moving around because of bone cancer in one of his legs. "It's a great help, as far as me gettin' around doin' stuff I can't do anymore," replied Neumann, when asked how much it will help to not have to worry about doing the work himself.

The volunteers also worked on two other homes in Lake Park Tuesday morning, including Betty English's home.

"Today, we are cleaning out the windows and the screens of the windows; wipin' 'em down and gettin' all the dirt and spiders and stuff out of 'em," explained Emory Turner, a House of Heroes volunteer.

English said she was happy when she learned that the volunteers were going to come to her house. "I was excited about it," said English. "I'm familiar with the program and I was glad that they were goin' to honor my husband in that way."

Her husband Fred was a retired Airmen and passed away in 2009.

Now, the House of Heroes organization will spend the next several months planning for their next round of homes. Volunteering to help those who volunteered to help all of us by protect our freedom.
