TIFTON, GA (WALB) -

A Tifton organization is preparing for a festival to commemorate the freedom of slaves.

Members of Dee and Doc Melton Sr. Cultural Visions are using a bullhorn to promote the first Juneteenth Festival at Fullwood Park in Tifton on Saturday. There will be live music, activities for kids and vendors at the event. It's to commemorate the freedom of all the American slaves on June 19th in 1865.

"It just encompasses everybody and it just teaches love and how we can make a better tomorrow for our children," said Ruenette Melton, Dee and Doc Melton Sr. Cultural Visions CEO. "It doesn't matter what state, what city but it just brings everybody together."

The festival starts Saturday at 10:00 a.m. The festival is also in honor of Doc Melton who was the first African American to run for any public office in Tift County in 1966. Juneteenth became a state holiday in Georgia in 2012.
