HARRIS COUNTY, GA (WTVM) -

Original Story

A man who claims he thought he hit someone with his car in Harris County has turned himself in to police.

Caderrickton Barnes was arrested in West Point and is now in the Harris County Jail. Barnes is charged with homicide by vehicle, failure to report an accident, failure to stop at the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license, and tampering with evidence.

He was given a $102,200 bond.

On June 16, the victim's body was discovered on I-85 in Harris County on Monday morning.

Georgia State Patrol confirms the pedestrian was struck and killed at about 3 a.m. by a driver who left the scene. The man's body was found about a quarter mile past the impact sight.

The victim has not been identified.

Police were notified of the incident when multiple calls came in that a car crashed into a tree. The body was found on the road near the Mile 1 marker near the tree.

The body was picked up by the Harris County Coroner.

Troopers say it is not clear whether the man was dragged by the vehicle but they do say evidence left behind may help them find the runaway driver.

"We've got a hit and run collision," said SFC Maurice Raines with Georgia State Patrol. "The driver left the scene and we're looking for anywhere from a 1997 to a 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix."

Barnes was driving a 2000 silver Pontiac Grand Prix.

The Georgia State Patrol has taken over the investigation with the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Sergeant Raines says it's illegal to walk on the interstate and no reason has been determined as to why the victim would have been where he was. He said there are a number of reasons that we may never know.
