Teen tuba player alerts family to fire, helps everyone get out safely

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) -

A teenage tuba player is being credited with alerting his family about a house fire and getting them out safely.

Columbia Division Fire Chief Mark Wright says a two-story home located at 373 Denman Loop in Lake Carolina started in the attic early Monday morning.

Wright says the teenager, tuba player Ashard Rainey, alerted everyone about the fire so they could get out safely.

"I don't know what woke me up. I just woke up, looked to my right, thought I saw a fire," said Rainey. "I thought I was dreaming for a second, but I saw a fire, then I was like everyone has to get out. I have to get everyone out."

According to Wright, the family has been displaced, but no one was injured. Wright says the roof of the home is destroyed, but firefighters were able to save the first and second floor.

No word yet on what caused the fire or how much damage was done.
