Walgreens arsonist made two attempts

Fire investigators quickly determined a fire that broke out inside in a Northwest Albany Walgreens was intentionally set, and that who ever did it had tried a day earlier.

Around 10:30 Sunday night, firefighters were called to Walgreens at the corner of Dawson Road and Whispering Pines.

Smoke had filled the store which had closed a half-hour earlier.

It turns out that someone tried to do the same thing on Saturday in the same place inside the store, but the fire did not get going.

AFD Arson Investigator Sam Harris said someone had set fire to some merchandise in one of the aisles, but the sprinkler system activated, and put the fore out.

"It gives us a time frame both days to go back and look at the video and see what common denominators may have been there. Who was in the area.  Who was possible in the store at the time," said Fire Chief James Carswell.

The store did not appear to have suffered major damage, but there was water and smoke damage.

Firefighters used fans to remove smoke from inside the business.

Investigators will check to see if surveillance video captured the person responsible.
