VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -
As Dorothy Nickell works at her desk in the Women's and Gender Studies Office at VSU, she's preparing for a much more difficult task. Soon she'll undergo chemotherapy for breast cancer.
"Those are words you never expect to hear in your lifetime, 'you have stage two breast cancer'," Nickell explained. "And your world stops; your world stops. Everybody else's keeps goin', and everything keeps goin' around you, but for you, you don't know what tomorrow brings."
She was diagnosed in April and has already undergone a double mastectomy. She said one of the most frustrating parts of the whole process so far was having to wait nearly a month after her surgery to see an oncologist.
"I was angry, mad, sad, very depressed." To cheer her up, and to help her with her medical bills, Nickell's coworkers and friends put together a fundraiser in her honor. It will be held Saturday night from 7 to 10 p.m. at Hildegards in Downtown Valdosta.
"It was very heart touching, but I'm also kind of a private person when it comes to things like that. So, it took me a little bit to say 'okay, let's just go ahead and progress with this,'" said Nickell.
Tracy Woodard is the director of the Women's and Gender Studies Program at VSU and has been a big support to Nickell. She says it's not easy watching her friend go through the ups and downs of her cancer fight. "We've all cried, we all still cry. Just watchin' her struggle with it is very hard," Woodard admitted.
The fundraiser will include live music, food, and a silent auction. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door.
